what is taught in horse lessons?

retrieving & halter

Each lesson is started by retrieving the horse(s) from the paddock or pasture by greeting the horse with a treat. The rider will be taught how to safely approach the horse and how to hold his/her hand when offering a treat. We will properly put the halter on the horse’s head and lead the horse back to the barn for grooming.

grooming & saddling

The rider will be shown the various types of brushes and equipment used for grooming and the importance of grooming. Next, I will place the saddle on the horse and go over the saddle terms that need to be attached and assembled. I will explain to rider, the importance of properly assembling each strap and buckle. Before riding, we always do a safety check to make sure the saddle is correct, the stirrups are adjusted, and helmets are worn properly.

learning the basics

I show the riders how to mount and dismount a horse. Once the rider is comfortably sitting in the saddle, I will lead them into the Round-pen where we’ll begin the warm up and riding. I always tell my riders that we will progress at their own pace and comforts. We begin by leading the rider and working our way up to explaining how to stop and move forward. When the rider has achieved that, I explain the different ways reins are used to turn the horse in right and left directions.

ages 4+

Depending upon the riders experience and age will determine some of the activities performed. For the younger riders, I will show them how to do things and for the more experienced, they will be able to do things themselves. I understand the younger riders have shorter attention spans so we may ride around to visit the other animals or fun things. There is a horse swing, play house, and trampoline in the yard that the youngers enjoy taking breaks and playing on. I want the kids’ horse experience to be fun and enjoyable!

riding off property

After we’ve covered the basics and the rider is comfortable handling the horse safely and effectively on their own, the rider will have the option to ride around the property independently or taken on a trail ride with me.

groundwork & horse care

I also show riders some ground work as it is very important to exercise and maintain respect between the horse and rider. More of the responsibilities are discussed with the rider as far as farrier, vet maintenance, feed, cost, etc. I ask the rider what their goals and interests are so I can explain some of the different avenues they can go in the horse industry.

independence

Ultimately, these lessons are taught to build confidence and experience so the rider can ride the horse safely and independently without my assistance. At the end of the lesson, the rider will dismount the horse, we’ll put the equipment away, and release the horse into the paddock.

how often to take lessons

Most riders take lessons 1-2x per week. The more repetition the better you’ll remember all of the steps. Some people come biweekly. It really depends what works best for you. In the Summer, there is a daytime Wranglers Program and kids can get their lessons scheduled on the days they are at the barn.

leasing

There is a leasing option after completing horse lessons once the rider has demonstrated the ability to ride, tack up, and do groundwork. The rider will ride twice per week and help with barn chores prior to riding. The rider is expected to be helpful assisting others to gain leadership skills.

private boarding

After the rider has proven their commitment to caring and riding the horse regularly, I can help assist in finding a horse suitable for purchase, hauling, boarding, etc. If you have a place to keep the horse at your home, I can help with any input, training, lessons at your home.

If you are interested in private lessons at your property, horse training, or even barnsitting while you’re away from home, I’d be happy to help you. wheatlandvalleystables@gmail.com
